Gauteng’s medal hopefuls, VUT and TUKS in the women’s category of the 2023 edition of VSA’s Champions Cup hosted at the UKZN’s Westville Campus Sports Centre in Durban posted results that earned them a place in the semi-final stage.
In the group stage the Vaal University of Technology (VUT) triumphed over Valencia (Limpopo); Ballers (Western Cape and KAD (Gauteng) in straight sets (3-0) to lead their group. However, VUT were edged out in their final group match against TUKS in a breath taking five set- encounter by 3 sets to 2. Despite VUT’s loss to TUKS, they retained the number one spot in their group. TUKS from Tshwane joined VUT as the second placed team in group B.
Making their debut in the 2023 Champions Cup, Mpumalanga’s Beat Masters lived up to their name as they ‘’beat’’ their fellow competitors to rise to the number one position in group A. Defending champions, UKZN women’s team who suffered a loss against KZN’s Durban University of Technology (DUT) ended up as group A’s second -best team.
In the men’s category, tournament favourites, KZN’s Lions all-out power attacking and blocking strategy put them in pole position to reach the podium as medallists. Gauteng’s top men’s team, the Vaal University of Technology (VUT) earned the number 2 place in group A. Their on- court energy and
clinical finishing at the net entertained and excited the crowd at the UKZN Sports Centre. With prize money on offer and two places available at the Zone V1 Club Championship in Lesotho in December this year promises great excitement to the fans who rock up at UKZN’s Sports Centre this weekend.
