The newly elected top brass of the Zone 6 countries, Khalid Cassam (President) from Mozambique and Deputy President, Anthony Mokoena (South Africa) swung into action by bringing up to speed the Zone’s 10 member states by providing a smorgasbord of indoor and beach volleyball competitions to revitalise the zone.
Heading their list of Zonal competitions is the widely publicised inaugural Beach Volleyball competition scheduled to take place in Maputo, Mozambique from 3 to 7 March. The Maputo event promises to be fiercely contested as the participating clubs will be using the competition as preparations for their players to make their respective country’s national teams for the African Leg of the Commonwealth Games Qualifier in Ghana. The Qualifier takes place in Accra, the Ghanian capital from 24 to 29 March. .
VSA President Anthony Mokoena felt it prudent to sanction the entry of two men’s teams and two women’s teams that will allow the coaches to try different combinations at training camps before settling on the teams that will be South Africa’s representatives at the Commonwealth Games Qualifier in Ghana.
The fans at the Maputo beach volleyball champs will see in action veteran club players and youngsters from South Africa setting the beach courts alight on their way to the winners’ podium. SA top club players, Ofentse Motlhobi and partner Clint Stemmet will be joined by the women’s pairing of Palesa Masinga and Natasha Webber to lock horns with fellow Africans for the top spot in the zonal event.
According to Vice President Mike Makhubela who presently heads VSA Beach Volleyball portfolio, the entry of the country’s ‘’ up and coming’’ brightest young rising stars, Tatiana Simopoulos and Costandina Karina Kinsey (women) , and Danilo von Ludwiger and Lukholo Jooste (men) in such international competitions will lay the foundations for creating a pool of future top class players in the sport.
‘’ I am confident that given greater exposure on the international stage our young rising stars will soon grace the podium as winners,’’ said Makhubela.
The SA club teams will fine tune preparations at a camp at the DIZ Beach Volleyball arena in Edenvale before they depart to Mozambique.
