CHAMPIONS CUP 2017 – DAY 3

DAY 3

It was a sad Day 3 of the Champions Cup for host province Kwa  Zulu Natal as none of its nine (9) men’s teams or its two (2) women’s teams could get into the semi final stage and work their way to reach the podium as medallists.

However KZN’s best performers were its men’s teams: Liberte, UKZN and DUT who exited the tournament in the quarter final stage. VUT beat Liberte (3-1) while UKZN and DUT were edged out by Kamplits and Uni Jozi (UJ) by the same margin.

In the Kamplits versus Quantum women’s  semi final clash the former proved to be too strong for the latter as they wrapped up the match in straight sets (3-0) (25-7; 25-21; 25-14) to book their place in the final for the first time.

It was sweet revenge in the semi final match between defending champions UWC and VUT, last year’s silver medallists when the Gauteng lasses pulled out  all the stops to win a hard fought 3-2 win ( 25-22; 19-25; 18-25; 25-19; 15-7). VUT will meet Limpopo’s Kamplits in Sunday’s televised final.

The men’s semi final encounters had all the trappings of a final. UJ triumphed over UWC, the 2016 silver medallists in straight sets (3-0) (25-18; 25-20; 25-17) while Kamplits and VUT had the crowd on their feet with their lethal offensive play and power blocking at the net.

When VUT won the opening set by a 25-18 score line it seemed that the students will go all the way to close proceedings to square up against UJ in the final. However Kamplits had other plans as their persistence at challenging their opponents at the net paid off with a well deserved (18-25; 25-16; 25-23; 25-21) victory.

Day 4 fixtures kick off at 10:00 with the men and women’s 3rd/4th playoff followed by the women’s final between the Vaal University of Technology (VUT) and Kamplits of Limpopo at 12:00.

It will be a 2pm start for the men’s final between Uni Jozi (UJ)and Kamplits.
