Day 2

The race to get into the second round of the Champions Cup created great excitement among the fans as their favourite teams threw caution to the wind to make into the top two positions of their respective groups  on Day 2 of the Champions Cup at UKZN’s Westville Campus Sports Centre .

Defending men’s champions, Liberte of KZN were made to fight all the way to scrape a hard fought 3-1 win (25-22; 25-23; 21-25; 26-24) against KZN’s minnows, Falcons. The win puts Liberte in second position in Group A.

In Group B, university teams VUT and DUT have booked their places in the knock out stage.

Groups  C and D teams viz. UKZN and All Star Saints and UWC and Kamplits will join their counterparts from groups A and B in a hotly contested Knock Out stage.

In the women’s round robin stage defending champions UWC  blasted their way past their opponents , PMB VC and Quantum in straight sets (3-0) to set up a semi final encounter against last year’s silver medallists, VUT .

Kamplits of Limpopo, the dark horses of the tournament will square up against Quantum of Johannesburg in a semi final clash that is expected to attract a huge following at the venue.

Quantum’s coach, Size Vardhan will have to beef up his defence at the net to subdue Kamplits’quick hitting power attackers to make it into the televised final on Sunday.
