Day 1 (27 April 2017)

Volleyball South Africa’s (VSA) premier national inter club championship for men and women,’ The Champions Cup’ got underway on Freedom Day with out a hitch at the University of Kwa Zulu Natal’s Westville Campus Sports Centre.

The Champions Cup billed as a gateway tournament for African zonal and continental championships attracted the country’s top 15 men’s teams and 7 top women’s teams each claiming their own bragging rights that had their fans salivating before the event started.

In the women’s Pool A, newcomers PMBVC ended up as the pool’s whipping girls as they succumbed to back to back defeats to the University of Western Cape (UWC) and Johannesburg based Quantum.

Kamplits of Limpopo were the toast of Pool B when they recorded straight sets wins (3-0) against the tournament’s 2016 silver medallists, theVaal University of Technology (VUT) and the University of Kwa Zulu Natal (UKZN) to occupy  pole position on the opening day of the national showpiece.

Defending men’s champions, Liberte of KZN suffered an early set back when they were out gunned by a fired up Uni Jozi (UJ 0f Gauteng) by 3 sets to 1. With UJ’s win against KZN’s Falcons the former became POOL  A’s top team.

With straight sets wins (3-0) against PMB VC and Durban University of Technology (DUT) , the Vaal University of Technology (VUT) are poised to head Pool B.

The University of Kwa Zulu Natal (UKZN) and Capetonians, All Star Saints are favoured to proceed to the knock out stage while UWC and Limpopo’s Kamplits are tipped to head Pool D.
